Brendan Ormsby made his first appearance of the season and went close to getting a comeback goal when the keeper did well to keep his header out. It was one of several near misses on the Mexborough goal as Simon Grayson, Nigel Smith and Peter Maguire also went close. A Vince Brokie penalty saw United take the lead in the twenty-seventh minute and Collins in the home goal tipped a scorching volley from Peter Mumby on to the bar. The keeper and the woodwork also combined to keep out a Peter Maguire header, just before the end of the first half. Darryl Franklin replaced David Batty at Outside Right after half-time. Grenville Shorte replaced Brendan Ormsby at Left Half after fifty-three minutes. It was in the fifty third minute that Mexborough scored their goal to draw level after being on the attack from the start of the second half. Nigel Smith had the chance to restore United's lead but could only hit the post, but, in the seventy-fifth minute Peter Magire scored with a rising shot from twelve yards. Russell Wigley came on for Nigel Smith at Outside Left with five minutes left on the clock. In the final minute as the light was fading fast, Kevin Noteman managed to head the ball just inside the far post to make it 3-1. Simon Old and Michael Knop were the unused Leeds substitutes.
